Held Breath, Soap Bubble

All of us are scavengers, grasping onto fragments and impressions of the past. Through photographs and objects, we are constantly collecting and re-collecting in an attempt to cling on to residues and crumbs. An experience akin to holding grains of sand in the palms of your hands. We are hoarders of the impermanent and the fragile, searching for connection and belonging through navigating our interpersonal histories.

Held Breath, Soap Bubble explores the impermanent, things that cannot last forever. Our practice of collection breathes life into souvenirs - echoes of the past made tangible through reconstruction. In between each breath, we adamantly hold onto what we know cannot last. Just like a breath must eventually be exhaled, a soap bubble will inevitably pop. Objects become conduits for the ephemeral and each mark we leave becomes a relic of our attempts to keep these transient fragments close. These suspended vessels, while varying in size and material, all collectively become a way for us to pinpoint the memories, relationships and environments that matter to us.

From drawing and painting, to ceramics, sculpture and installation, four selected artists delve into the nuances of compulsive collection. In touching upon a wide variation of ideas from the nostalgia of childhood and girlhood, to the finding belonging in nature and nonhuman, what brings us together is our searching for connection in the impermanent.

Selected artists include Jade Emsley, Jacqueline Ito, Janne Meijer and Kornelia Plasewicz. The exhibition will open on the 30th August for a Private view from 6pm until 9pm, and will remain open on the 31st of August from 11am until 6pm.
